US Family Health Plan, a Department of Defense-sponsored health plan, is made a available by nonprofit health care providers in six serviceareas across the country, and offers the TRICARE Prime uniform benefit to uniformed services be neficiaries residing in those service areas.

| History | 1981 - Congress designates certain former U.S. Public Health facilities as Uniformed Services Treatment Facilities (USTFs) to provide health care for uniformed services beneficiaries. 1982 - Responsibility for overseeing the USTF Program transfers from the Department of Health and Human Services to the Department of Defense (DoD). 1993 - USTFs are reorganized by DoD into the Uniformed Services Family Health Plan. 1997 - Congress designates the USTFs that provide the Uniformed Services Family Health Plan as “TRICARE Designated Providers,” making them permanent parts of the military health care system. 1998 - Each of the Uniformed Services Family Health Plan providers begin to offer the TRICARE Prime benefit. 2001 - The Plan name is shortened to US Family Health Plan. Copayments are eliminated for active duty dependents and for members age 65 and over with Medicare Part B, making health care essentially free for these beneficiaries. |
